Our methodology

GreenPair separates what a product is from how it reaches you. Your location changes the transport estimate — never the production footprint.

Total = materials + manufacturing + packaging + distribution + use + end-of-life

Current status: demonstration only

All products, prices and emission values in this MVP are fictional. The calculation engine is real — changing destination or shipping speed genuinely recalculates — but its factors are illustrative samples, not verified data.

Production footprint

Raw materials, manufacturing, packaging, use phase (fuel or electricity over the product's typical life — e.g. 200,000 km for a car, 15 years for a fridge) and end-of-life are modeled per product variant. These are fixed regardless of where you live. If reliable data is unavailable we show “Insufficient data” rather than estimating.

Location-based transport

We calculate distance from the retailer's actual shipping warehouse (never its headquarters) to your city. Continental routes use road freight at ~1.2× great-circle distance. Intercontinental standard shipping is modeled as sea freight; express as air freight. A last-mile delivery of 0.15 kg CO₂e per parcel is added. Unknown origins are flagged as uncertain.
road0.105 kg CO₂e / tonne-km (demo)
rail0.025 kg CO₂e / tonne-km (demo)
sea0.015 kg CO₂e / tonne-km (demo)
air0.6 kg CO₂e / tonne-km (demo)

Data quality

Each product carries a confidence level (high / medium / low) and a status: verified, calculated from sourced factors, or demonstration-only. Products are ranked against each other only when their data is comparable.

Other indicators

Water use and other indicators are kept separate from the carbon figure and shown only where data exists.

Excluded today

Retail store energy, customer travel, returns, and supply-chain variance between batches.

Roadmap

Future versions will align with ISO 14040/44 life-cycle assessment, the EU Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) framework, and the GLEC Framework for logistics emissions, connected to lifecycle databases and retailer logistics data.
